The new HANDMADE by Cassie Burden

Renee’ met Cassie at a class she was teaching in Portland a few weeks ago. I flew into Portland with just an overnight bag and no sewing supplies. I wanted to see what her book was about. She was fantastic and insisted I use her machine and supplies so I could make this cut e Novella Composition Book Cover. This book has some great gift ideas.
“We are experiencing a resurgence of all things HANDMADE. The new handmade is an appreciation for the unique object, for every individual’s creativity, and for the process of creating. There’s something soothing, involving, and immensely satisfying about making something by hand”

1850 Hard Tack

I thought I would mention how great our Quilting Bee went. It’s not too late to join us for this fun class on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Emma and Renee’ invite you to join our Quilting Bee on October 17. Come and learn the local history, share recipes, stories, and learn a new quilt block. Bring your children 8 and up for some fun prairie crafting. Come and learn the local history, share recipes. Emma baked up a batch of hard tack for everyone to enjoy. She thought you might enjoy this recipe. We decided hard tack must have been their version of CHIPS!

Renee’s prairie craft class on Braided Rugs was a big success!

RECIPE:

Hard tack is an old-fashioned flat bread or sea biscuit that was popular with the pioneers and sailors because it was lightweight, compact, tasty and stored well

4 cups flour (white, wheat rye, barley, graham or combination)

1 cup rolled oats

½ cup shortening

2 cups buttermilk, yogurt, cream or milk

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven 400 degrees

Mix in a large bowl and form dough into a ball

Roll dough on a lightly floured surface as thin as you can. The thinner you roll it, the better the hardtack will taste

Sprinkle rolled out dough lightly with salt if you wish. Cut to any shape desired, and place pieces close together on greased cookie sheet

Bake until edges begin to brown. Remove cookie sheet from oven, turn hardtack over and bake until it is crisp and dry and lightly browned

As soon as hardtack is baked, put on rack to cool

Store hardtack in airtight container, and it will stay fresh as long as it is kept dry.

Graphic 45

Emma and Renee found this treasure at CHA

With singular focus on “individualism” and disdain for the commonplace, a flamboyant style was bornin the 1920’s and 30’s, that captured the imagination of the world and became all the rage.

Graphic 45 combines this era’s vintage charm eith vibrant color, irresistible texture and imaginative design to creat paper collections with a decades-old appeal that’s both fresh and familiar.

In a day and age when most people are communicating digitally, the tactile pleasure of ink on paper puts us in touch with a simpler time and place-perhaps reminding us that good design is unchanging with the same basic qualities yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Come in and see our selection of these great papers that can be used in many craft project, paper crafting and scrapbooking. I have used them in the Amate jewelry findings to make pendants and bracelets

Wire Wrapping Jewlery

Wire wrapping is a method used in jewelry to make a different design or creation. It involves the use of tools to wrap the wire around pendants or to make earrings or rings. Some of the tools you need to wire wrap are round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, wire cutters, and a ring mandrel. To wrap jewelry you will want to use a 20- gauge wire or thicker. Some of the basic techniques include twisting the wire, wrapping a wire bundle, crimping or flattening the wrap.

Gum Paste Rose

Individual hand-shaped petals are the secret to the incredible realism of Gum Paste Roses. Gum paste can be rolled very thin, yet hold its shape. As a result, your flowers will have texture and form that rivals nature.

Tools:

Floral Collection Flower Making Set

10-Pc. Fondant/Gum Paste Tool Set

Rolling Pin

Brush Set

Foam square

Craft block

Toothpick

Ingredients:

Gum Paste Mix

Gum Paste Adhesive

instructions

Step 1

Make rose bases. Roll a 5/8 in. ball of gum paste and form into a teardrop shape, 1 1/4 in. high. Dip toothpick in adhesive and insert in bottom of base. Insert toothpick in craft block and let dry 48 hours

Step 2

Roll out gum paste 1/16 in. thick. For 20 small roses, use tulip petal cutter from Flower Making Set to cut 1 petal for each; cut petal into 3 separate petals.

Step 3

Place petals horizontally on thin foam dusted with cornstarch. Soften top petal edge with medium ball tool from Fondant Gumpaste Tool set.

Step 4

Brush back of petals from midpoint down with adhesive. Wrap petals around base to form the bud for each rose.

Step 5

Cut another set of 3 petals to add to each base. Slightly widen and elongate each petal using modeling stick. Turn petals so the rounded end is the top of petal and the point is the bottom. Soften top half of petal edge with ball tool on thin foam. Turn petals over. Add adhesive to bottom half of petals; position and press into rose base. This completes the small rose.
